The Fast Duroc has been selected for growth, feed efficiency, yield, loin size, and backfat thickness. This boar provides a lean and high yielding carcass with pH, color, marbling and drip loss characteristics that packers desire.
Health & Biosecurity
Since the company’s founding in 1982, Fast Genetics has maintained its outstanding health status. The original stocking of animals was done by placing caesarean derived piglets into the nucleus farm. Since then, no live animals have entered Fast Genetics’ nucleus herds and new genes are only introduced by way of embryo transfer.
Herd health is monitored through monthly serology and preserved under its veterinary staff’s guidance. Due to remoteness and natural isolation of its production facilities, Fast Genetics enjoys unique biosecurity advantages that contribute to herd health preservation. In addition to the natural biosecurity advantages, Fast Genetics owns and operates its own feed mill, transportation fleet, and truck wash. Fast Genetics administers extreme barn entry protocols of both materials and people.
Research & Development
SEX SORTED SPERM
Fast Genetics is pioneering sex sorted sperm in the swine industry. Sex sorted sperm and low dose semen technology at the nucleus level will allow us to skew gender ratio, accelerating genetic progress in all product lines. Introducing sex sorted sperm throughout our multiplication will allow for an increase in product supply. The introduction of sex sorted sperm at the commercial level will allow Fast Genetics’ customers to skew gender ratio based on many economic and management factors.
GENOMICS
Fast Genetics genotypes all animals raised in the nucleus. We evaluate tens of thousands of SNPs per pig using proprietary genomic evaluations. The main purpose for genomic analysis is the use of genomic EBVs. The use of genomic EBVs for genomic evaluations translates into significantly faster genetic gain, creating better pigs for Fast Genetics’ customers.
PHENOTYPES
Fast Genetics continually invests and discovers economically important phenotypes. Phenotypes are measured at packing plants, commercial farms, and genetic nucleuses. All of the measurements we record improves key metrics including total born, piglet weight, feed conversion, and average daily gain.
